Leal’s Days Numbered…
20 February 2012
Word coming out of the Orlando Pirates camp is that the club’s management has not taken kindly to the poor results being produced by coach Julio Caesar Leal. The Buccaneers succumbed to a 3-1 defeat to Angolan side C.R.D. Libolo at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Sunday, putting their CAF Champions League campaign in dangerous territory. Bucs will need a near miracle to advance to the next round of the tournament, something chairman Irvin Khoza and the club’s top brass is far from happy with.
Leal replaced Dutchman Ruud Krol at the beginning of the season, after the previous coach’s contract with Pirates came to an end. Khoza took a huge gamble, to the outcry of most of the team’s supporters, by allowing Krol to leave. Last season Krol led Pirates to a record three trophies and Leal was under pressure straight away to emulate this mammoth feat.
To his credit, Pirates have already won the MTN8 Cup and the Telkom Knockout Cup under the Brazilian and, if results go their way, they’re still in contention to win the league title. There’s also the Nedbank Cup to play for. However, it’s no secret that Khoza wishes to stamp his club’s authority in Africa this season and, after breaking the bank to secure the best players in the country, he will not be happy with Leal’s latest disappointment. Sources at the club claim that Khoza is already searching for Leal’s replacement, as he doesn’t want to risk losing out on the Nedbank Cup or league title.
