Igesund To Assess 12 More

11 December 2012

Following the announcement of Gordon Igesund’s 24-man Bafana Bafana squad that will take on Malawi on December 22 in an international friendly at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, the coach said that 12 more players will be assessed.

The national team coach has called a number of new faces to his squad as he plans for next year’s African Cup of Nations finals. Igesund explained that he has used the last five internationals played to look at various combinations and said that the game against Malawi will be no different.

“I have been using the past five matches to look at various players and this one against Malawi is no different. The only difference is that this is the last chance for me and my technical team to have a final look at what we have at our disposal,” Igesund told SAFA.

He added, “Time for observing and assessing the players is almost over, and I believe this match will give us an indication of where we are and where we are going.”

In addition the coach said that 12 more players will go into a mini-training camp in Johannesburg, from 27 – 30 December, where he will have a last look at the players.

Igesund said that the final 23-man 2013 Afcon squad will be announced on Sunday, December 30.

“We initially intended to name the final squad after the match against Norway on the 9th of January next year, but after careful consideration, we have decided to name the squad at the end of our upcoming December camp so that when we start the January camp we have all the players we are going to use in the AFCON tournament.

“That will enable them to play together the last two preparation matches against Norway and Algeria,” Igesund concluded.

12-man mini-training camp additions:

Darren Keet - KV Kortrijk FC (Sweden)

Eric Mathoho - Kaizer Chiefs

Anele Ngcongca - Racing Genk FC (Belgium)

Andile Jali - Orlando Pirates

Teko Modise - Mamelodi Sundowns

Bongani Khumalo - Paok (Greece)

Ricardo Nunes - MSK Zilina (Slovakia)

Thulani Serero - Ajax Amsterdam (Holland)

Katlego Mphela - Mamelodi Sundowns

Benni McCarthy - Orlando Pirates

Kagisho Dikgacoi  - Crystal Palace (England)

Dean Furman - Oldham Athletic (England)

Most of these players r suppose to be in the startin eleven not being assessed...we all know what mpela can do in a BB jersey...teko is one of the best playmakers who plays in AFRICA..JALI the best midfield player in SA.

Teko is not the best play maker! How many assist has he made? He holds the ball longer then he needs to while the strikers make runs. He can change a game yet when u play against a very defensive team he becomes useless n keeps passing diagonal passes. He is not afeciant but GI can work on him.

We can't win Afcon with out a good defence and if u look at these difenders one can see our back line is weak! Tels hope GI can make them jell before Afcon starts. I would have liked to see Mashemaite there to back up guys like khumalo.
