Downs Fail To Fire Against Cosmos
19 February 2012
ABSA Premiership
Result: Sundowns 0-0 Cosmos
Venue: Loftus Stadium
Date: 19 February 2012
Mamelodi Sundowns would live to rue their missed chances as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Jomo Cosmos at Loftus Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Brazilians started well with a couple of early opportunities. Teko Modise flashed a shot wide before Jabulani Shongwe tried his luck from distance.
Katlego Mphela went wide from the edge of the area in the 15th minute as his drought continued before Modise curled a shot just over 11 minutes later.
Cosmos had started to settle and Mark Haskins showed great skill to break through the Sundowns defence before going down in the area but the referee waved play on.
Matthew Rusike should have given Cosmos the lead in the 35th minute when he latched onto the ball at the edge of the area under no pressure but a fantastic save from Wayne Sandilands kept his side-footed effort out.
After riding out a short spell of pressure, Sundowns looked to finish strongly but Phali would make two sublime saves within the last five minutes.
First Lebohang Mokoena tried to curl a shot around the stopper from just outside the six-yard area but Phali tipped it around at full stretch.
Themba Zwane then showed great skill to ditch two defenders at the edge of the area before firing toward the top corner but Phali again came to the rescue as the game remained stuck at 0-0.
The second period got off to a slow start but the hosts were showing more urgency and the introduction of Anthony Laffor for Elias Pelembe made a difference.
The former SuperSport United man first whipped in a brilliant cross which Mphela poked wide of the target when he should have done better.
Laffor then forced a save from Phali before missing a glorious chance when he guided a header wide of the target under no pressure.
The Brazilians stepped up the pressure as the match and saw a header flashed over while Haskins and Rusike were the most dangerous players for Cosmos.
Sundowns poured forward in stoppage time but their inability to sink their chances would haunt them as Cosmos left with a valuable point.
Sundowns: Wayne Sandilands, Method Mwanjali, Siyanda Xulu, Siyabonga Ngubane, Jabulani Shongwe, Elias Pelembe (Elias Pelembe 62'), Lebohang Mokoena, Teko Modise, Themba Zwane, Katlego Mphela (Nyasha Mushekwi 66'), Surprise Moriri.
Cosmos: Avril Phali, Ousmane Berthe (Tshidiso Tukane 59'), Ofosu Appiah, Gladwin Shitolo, SIyabonga Nhlapo, Matthew Rusike, Tshepo Tomanyane, Bamuza Sono (McDonald Nhlapo 73'), Elhadji Samb, Mark Haskins, Siyabonga Nontshinga (Alton Meiring 91').
