Coach Not Giving Up On Zongo
10 February 2012
Blackburn Rovers assistant coach, Mondli Funani, has revealed to the Siya crew that he had a role in the upbringing of Masibusane Zongo, and was one of the people that played a part in him joining SuperSport United’s junior ranks.
Rovers missed out on the opportunity to have the talented midfielder join their side in January, and Funani revealed that he played a part in the club’s attempts to sign the player.
“We almost got him because SuperSport had agreed to release him to us and we did everything, but unfortunately the deal fell through at the last minute. That boy grew up under my guidance. In fact, I’m very close to his family because I used to play football with his father. I coached Masibusane as a youngster and I still remember that we were in Cape Town for a junior tournament when he was spotted by the scouts of SuperSport as a 11-year-old boy. I had to persuade his mother to allow him to leave because she was reluctant to part ways with his son at such a young age. We wanted him to come down here so that we could help him in his career. To fail having tried is something completely different and that’s why I wanted to give it a try,” said Funani.
Zongo has since signed a loan deal with Wits and word from the Students is that he is doing well in training.
“I think there will be a lot of difference in his career at Wits if you look at the work they did on a player like (Mbulelo) Mabizela. Roger (De Sa) has an understanding of the background of our players and will guide him,” explained Funani.

I watch him almost every day at the practice, this boy is the most skillful player in south africa, if he is fit n sober, he can take any player on a one on one situation without any difficulties. At Wits, we will see the very best of him. After that he can Join Sundowns so we can let Pelembe go to Isralia lol.

I played with Zongo(Ndzina) back in the day in Cape Town, Danone Nations Cup in 2002 under the guidance of Mr Funani aka Ta- Mooi, he would have resurrected his career, that's for sure. Great player needing a role model qha
