Chivuta Has Pirates Seeing Stars
28 September 2011
ABSA Premiership
Date: 28 September 2011
Result: Free State Stars 1 – 0 Orlando Pirates
Venue: Charles Mopeli Stadium
Referee: Gabriel Sekopo
Free State Stars upset the mighty Orlando Pirates on Wednesday night with the latest possible goal to claim a one – nil victory in their ABSA Premiership clash in the Charles Mopeli Stadium.
It took a stoppage time strike from Noah Chivuta to separate the sides, who seemed for all the world to be playing out to a goalless draw.
Ea Lla Koto and the Buccaneers traded possession in a largely evenly matched encounter, but it was the hosts who were more prepared to shoot and collected twelve shots at goal, though it must be said that the lion’s share did not require a save.
Even the replacement of Pirates number one, Moeneeb Josephs by Senzo Meyiwa failed proved Stars with an opening. Rudiger Gilbert did try to test Meyiwa within minutes of his introduction, but like so many of the host's efforts Gilbert’s sailed high of the bar.
With the match looking set for a goalless draw, second-half substitute Noah Chivuta stepped up to take a free-kick, dangerously located in left-field about 25 meters from the Pirates goal. And so in the second minute of the referee’s stoppage time Chivuta directed his free-kick into the top left corner of the Bucs net and in so doing sealed the victory for Ea Lla Koto.
The result ensures Pirates misery on their PSL travels continues and helps Stars up to seventh on the log.
Free State Stars: Kennedy Mweene, Rudiger Gilbert, Ouro Sadate, Ayanda Gcaba, Katlego Massego, Manti Mashego (Noah Chivuta 62’), Paulos Masehe, Soriola Gege, Coldrin Coetzee (Dove Wome 64’), Tashidiso Mosikidi (Diego Brown 58’) and Boltumelo Sekgobela.
