Chipolopolo Dumped Out
29 January 2013
Burkina Faso surprised defending African champions Zambia by holding them to a 0-0 draw as Chipolopolo went tumbling out of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations at the group stages.
The result proved to be enough for Burkina Faso to emerge as winners in Group C while Nigeria claimed second place following their victory over Ethiopia.
In a fairly quiet stadium, neither side really managed to find their best form and just eight minutes in Burkina Faso sufferd a blow with Alain Traore hitting the deck with a knee problem.
Davies Nkausu of Zambia followed eight minutes later when he injured his ankle following a strong tackle and came off the pitch in tears to be replaced by Joseph Musonda.
Zambia should have taken the lead soon after though when Collins Mbesuma was found in front of goal by a slick move but he fired straight at the goalkeeper.
Burkina Faso responded through Charles Kabore who skied his effort over the crossbar before Rainford Kalaba headed into the arms of the goalkeeper to end a scrappy half.
The game continued along the same lines into the second-half with the Stallions standing firm while Chipolopolo searched for a way through.
Mbesuma missed another chance with 30 minutes to go. With Nigeria still being held by Ethiopia at the time, Zambia were in with a chance but that changed when Victor Moses scored with 10 minutes to go in that game.
They frantically searched for a late winner but their failure to take their chances would be punished as the crashed out at the first hurdle.
Standard Bank Moment of the Match: Mbesuma powered his way onto the end of a Kalaba corner but he was unable to beat the goalkeeper and Chipolopolo suffered an early exit.

That pitch @Mbombela? terrible is understatement!organisers & stadium management are to blame, they knew long time ago abt this competition bt did nothing towards that sandy-grass-like pitch,Polokwane or Cape town stadiums should have been utilized instead,as for Zambia I'm not trying to form an excuse for u! No no no! U r out! Console yourselves that u r not alone going home
