Kaizer Chiefs defeated Platinum Stars 1-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in an ABSA Premiership clash this evening. A 45th minute header from Lucky Baloyi was enough to ensure all three points for the Soweto giants.
The match got underway as Chiefs were quick out the blocks as they immediately looked to make up for last week’s blunder.
Bernard Parker picked up a knock in the second minute and went down clutching his knee but he had treatment and returned to the park.
Parker hit a thunderous left footed strike from the edge of the area in the 9th minute, he had Siyabonga Mpontshane well beaten but was denied by the cross bar.
Lucky Baloyi took a shot in the 14th minute from deep inside the box but his attempt cleared the bar.
The Amakhosi thought they had opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Parker headed the ball into the back off the net however referee Zolile Mthetho disallowed the goal for offside. Replays revealed that Parker was actually onside when the ball was played into the box.
With half an hour played Chiefs continued to press but the Stars defence stood firm, not allowing them time and space in their third.
The Amakhosi dominated 65 percent of ball possession in the first-half and it paid off in the 45th minute. Lucky Baloyi got his head on Parker's corner and beat Mpontshane at the near post.
The first-half came to a close with Chiefs leading 1-0.
The second-half got underway and the opening five minutes after the break were battled in the centre of the park.
Stars were awarded a free-kick 30 yards out in the 50th minute. Sibusiso Msomi stepped up and hit a fierce strike that sailed just inches over Arthur Bartman’s goal.
With an hour played the AmaKhosi appeared to be satisfied to hold onto possession as they seemed content to hold onto their 1-0 lead.
Thuso Phala found himself with time and space inside the Chiefs area in the 65th minute but failed to be clinical as he headed the ball directly at Bartman.
Baloyi had an excellent opportunity to score his brace in the 75th minute. Scrappy defending gifted him the ball however he snapped at the chance and struck the ball wide.
Henrico Botes almost rescued a point for Stars in the 91st minute but his header was cleared off the line by Jimmy Tau.
The closing ten minutes of the encounter was end-to-end action but neither side took their chances as the match ended 1-0 in favour of Chiefs.
