Celtic Crowned TKO Champions
01 December 2012
Telkom Knockout
Result: Sundowns 0-1 Celtic
Date: 1 December 2012
Venue: Moses Mabhida Stadium
A controversial goal from Joel Mogorosi saw Bloemfontein Celtic claim the Telkom Knockout crown with a 1-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
Sundowns had the first real chance of the game in the sixth minute with a slick move. Richard Henyekane latched onto the ball after it was cushioned to him at the far post but he completely missed his volley.
Themba Zwane then sent a curling strike straight at Patrick Tignyemb before Teko Modise was denied by the goalkeeper by a good save.
Lennox Bacela was denied a chance at goal in the 15th minute by some good defending from Sundowns while Wayne Sandilands had to block the Celtic forward soon after and the rebound was lashed off target.
Themba Zwane sent a poor strike wayward in the 19th minute while Henyekane was unable to finish off a neat one-touch move from the Brazilians in the 27th minute.
Ruzaigh Gamildien almost put Celtic in front on the half-hour mark when Sundowns failed to clear a long ball forward but his strike zipped past the post.
Neither side was able to create any decent chances in the dying minutes of the half and the game remained locked at 0-0.
A goal would arrive two minutes into the second-half but it was not without controversy. Joel Mogorosi nodded on target after Wayne Sandilands was caught in no-man's land and although it seemed to have been cleared off the line, the goal was awarded.
Gamildien then went close to netting a second with a strike from the edge of the area but the effort went just wide of the post.
Sundowns saw a penalty appeal turned down two minutes later when the ball seemed to have hit Dominic Isaacs on the arm while Modise lashed a volley just wide in the 58th minute.
Anthony Laffor was introduced in the 59th minute and was lively for the Brazilians. Modise fired a wild strike off target in the 66th minute while Laffor went on a dazzling run in the 73rd minute but his eventual strike went straight to the goalkeeper.
Sundowns frantically searched for a late equaliser but saw Alje Schut nod wide in the 89th minute while Mogorosi hit the post at the other end moments later.
Eleazar Rodgers rifled an attempt just wide a minute later while Sandilands had to make a superb save to deny Bacela as Celtic held on to lift the trophy.
