CAF CL Focus: Pirates v Libolo
Teams: Orlando Pirates v CRD Libolo
Venue: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth
Time: 15.00
Orlando Pirates face Angolan side CRD Libolo in the first leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round.
Pirates will be looking to push on in the tournament and repeat their 1995 victory, starting with an attempt to use their home advantage against the 2011 champions of Angola.
Irvin Khoza has strengthened Julio Leal’s squad with the signings of Luis Boa Morte and Sifiso Myeni in order to take their African campaign seriously this year and many believe that the current Pirates squad, with the quality that they have, can go on to earn their second star.
Bucs won their first competitive game of 2012 with a 1-0 win over Black Leopards on Wednesday and they will be keen to follow that win up with another victory in order to make their life easier when they travel to the Angolan borders.
The club’s popular midfielder, Oupa Manyisa, says that he and his teammates will need to outplay their opponents rather than outmuscle them, if they are to get a result. He told Soccer-Laduma, "You see physically many of the African players are strongly built and big compared to us South African players. So going into this game we should avoid body contact and play using the ball. If we can be mentally strong and play the ball around then we can win the game. As a team we want to make history by winning another Champions League, and to do that we need to win the first game and proceed to the next round.”
Libolo will be making their second appearance in the competition, their first came in 2010, having won their domestic league last year and, despite knowing the threat that Pirates will offer, they will be keen to commit themselves well and get a result out of last year’s PSL champions.
The Angolan side is made up of mostly home-grown players however they have a trio of Brazilians, a Portuguese player and a Cameroonian who could also trouble the Pirates side.
Libolo haven’t played a competitive game since November 6th when they drew 3-3 with Cabinda, however, with several changes expected to the Pirates line-up from Wednesday, the two outfits could be on a similar playing field when it comes to match sharpness.
Form:
Pirates: W-W-L-W-W
Libolo: W-W-W-L-D
Players To Watch:
Pirates: Benni McCarthy
Libolo: Ze Kalanga
