Result: Moroka Swallows 3-0 Mamelodi Sundowns
Venue: Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium
Referee: Charl Theron
Moroka Swallows hammered Mamelodi Sundowns 3-0 with a little help from Brazilians goalkeeper Calvin Marlin in a Telkom Knockout clash at the Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium this evening.
The visitors started brightly with key marksman Katlego Mphela firing the first shot of real intent within the first five minutes amid a barrage of corners. Swallows were looking lethargic and they had goalkeeper Greg Etafia to thank for staying on level terms in the 14th minute. The Nigerian shotstopper made a cracking double save to keep out Mabhuti Khenyeza and a Mphela follow-up.
Teko Modise saw out 20 minutes of Sundowns dominance by putting a swerving free-kick narrowly over the crossbar after Swallows defender Ashraf Hendricks had clattered into Hlompo Kekana just outside the area. Hendricks did make amends by rising above Clayton Daniels a few minutes later and heading over from close-range in the Dube Birds' first show of offence.
The hosts began to build up a head of steam and three players could have got a touch on Lerato Chabangu's excellent cross to send Swallows into the lead on the half-hour mark. Kekana kept Etafia on his toes with an ambitious long-range drive that the Nigerian managed to tip over.
Daniels should have got his uncontested header on target in the 33rd minute but the former Ajax Cape Town man disappointed the Sundowns faithful and wasted a great Modise delivery.
Against the run of play, Swallows skipper Lefa Tsutsulupa gave his team the lead with a deft bit of skill to control James Mayinga's long ball forward, and then a turn-and-strike too good for Calvin Marlin in the 38th minute.
Kekana had another go from range but there were no further additions to the scoreline by the half-time interval.
Sundowns picked up where they left off when play got underway again and Mphela tested Etafia from a tight angle off a teasing through-ball from the hard-working Kekana. Killer smashed another shot into the side-netting before Elias Pelembe initiated a goalscramble with a half-smothered strike that Etafia eventually managed to recover just before the hour mark.
At the other end, Lerato Chabangu was looking sharp against his old club and had Marlin punching desperately with a sizzling free-kick. The 26-year-old striker was not to be denied on the night and caught Marlin in no-man's land with a accurate volley in the 65th minute to spark wild celebrations at the VW Dobsonville Stadium.
The shellshocked visitors toiled manfully to pull one back but the final ball would not fall for the Pretoria outfit. With ten minutes remaining, Khenyeza went for a spectacular bicycle-kick but the watchful Etafia was able to get behind the shot.
Much to Johan Neeskens' chagrin, it was the home side who wrapped up the win with a third through Siyabonga Nomvethe, six minutes from time. Fingers will be pointed at Calvin Marlin after he failed to hold on to substitute Oscar Machapa's shot and allowed the veteran striker a simple tap-in.
By the final whistle, Swallows had exacted a measure of revenge for their 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Sundowns earlier in the season.
Moroka Swallows: Etafia, Nergadze, Mayinga, Mungomeni, Isaacs, Hendricks, Makhanya (Maleka 73'), Mathebula (Machapa 72'), Tsutsulupa, Chabangu (Thwala 78'), Nomvethe
Mamelodi Sundowns: Marlin, Mwanjali, Letlabita, Daniels (Xulu 62'), Masenamela, Kekana, Modise, Moriri (Zwane 75'), Pelembe, Mphela (Mushekwi 64'), Khenyeza

Money isn't everything that motivates a worker bcz once you overpay your employees, they(players) tend to overlook the pride of the team as is the with Sunflops.

Sunclowns are a big embarrassment to the President. For crying out loud, he takes care of the financials and the players must win games. Coach, Nespray, Di-koekoe Buns Bapela, Jazzy Queen Modjadji, Malombo, Bricks, Mambush etc.etc and well Mr Trott, where is your pride guys. You have the best team but cannot win games. You are bad news. For me it is a grid revenge after you walloped me 4-0 in the league. One on one you have the best squad in our league. I would be ashamed if I was in your tescnical team. With MTN and Telkom cups gone, you are facing another season without a trophy. Shame Just Be Strong.
