Awal Attracts Interest
09 November 2012
Mohammed Awal could be lost to Maritzburg United sooner than expected, if his impressive performances in the team are anything to go by.
The Ghanaian defender has been a pillar of strength in Ernst Middendorp’s line-up since joining the team at the beginning of the season, and his performances have not gone unnoticed.
News reaching the Siya crew is that Free State Stars and Moroka Swallows are monitoring the player’s progress at The Team of Choice.
The 24-year-old joined the KwaZulu-Natal from Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko, on the back of a triumphant 2011/12 season. He was voted the best defender in the Ghanaian Premier League last season as Kotoko won the league for a record breaking 22nd time.
Despite the interest in his services, the Feyenoord Academy product told the Siya crew that his focus is on helping Maritzburg at the moment.
“For now I’m a Maritzburg United player. I don’t want to hear anything for now because we are playing and I want to concentrate on that. Maybe, after this season I may want to listen. I don’t want to hear anything for now,” said Awal.
Awal could be placed on the international stage, should he be selected for Ghana’s final 2013 Africa Cup of Nations squad, where scouts from across the globe will be looking to spot young talent.
