United Players Fume At Ref
21 January 2013
Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick have echoed the complaints raised by Alex Ferguson, after Manchester United’s draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Fergie was fuming after United shipped a late goal against Spurs, and allowed the London side to earn a hard-fought point in extra time.
The United manager claimed that the league leaders had been hard-done by, when they were not awarded a penalty for a trip in the box on Wayne Rooney by Steven Caulker.
Had United been given the spot-kick, they could have gone 2-0 up.
But as it happened, the linesman waved play on, and Clint Dempsey managed to secure Spurs a point.
Many pundits have found Fergie’s assertion that the linesman has a vendetta against United unsavoury, and have wondered just how the United manager gets away with his surly criticisms of officials.
And now Ferdinand and Carrick have also risked the ire of the authorities by slamming the performance of the linesman on Sunday.
They both believe that failing to give United a penalty was the turning point that allowed Spurs back into the game, and altered the Premier League title race slightly.
"One hundred per cent, it was a penalty,” Ferdinand told MUTV.
“I can't believe he didn't give it. The linesman on that side didn't really help us at all during the second half. We're disappointed the referee [Chris Foy] didn't give what was a stonewall penalty."
Carrick, who played for Spurs before moving to Old Trafford, added: "It was as clear a penalty as you're going to get.
"We're disappointed with that because it would have put us in a great position. Big decisions like that can change games and it did."

then get strong on your own, not by the linesman. They are so used to getting help from the officials. I'm sure Howard Webb will ref all Man U games from now on.
