Toffees Pile Misery On Magpies

03 January 2013

Howard

Newcastle slumped to their ninth defeat in 11 games as they were handed a 2-1 home defeat by Everton at St James’ Park.

Substitute Victor Anichebe scored the winner within 90 seconds of taking to the field after Papiss Cisse had given the Magpies and early lead and Leighton Baines had levelled with a magical free-kick.

The home fans had something to cheer about inside two minutes as Cisse nodded a route one delivery past Tim Howard after Sylvain Distin and Johnny Heitinga had collided.

Tim Krul kept the host’s lead in tact as he denied Baines twice in quick succession before Davide Santon did well to deny Marouane Fellaini in his return to action.

Newcastle were very nearly two ahead when James Perch headed against the post but the next goal came at the other end via the magnificent left boot of Baines.

The full back lined up a free-kick from an ambitious distance before striking it cleanly through the wall and past a bewildered Krul.

Five minutes into the second half Shola Ameobi was very close to reclaiming the lead for the hosts but could not direct his shot on target.

The Magpies would go on to rue that miss as David Moyes brought on Anichebe and he made an instant impact as Steven Pienaar and Fellaini combined to feed the Nigerian who finished smartly.

Newcastle tried desperately to rescue a point but Howard saved a Cisse attempt as Everton moved into fifth position in the league.
