Sterling Questioned By Police
20 November 2012
Raheem Sterling’s breakthrough season has taken an unwelcome turn, after he was questioned by police in relation to an alleged attack on a woman.
The 17-year-old Liverpool sensation was questioned by Merseyside police under caution, according to the Liverpool Echo.
A spokeswoman said: "Merseyside Police can confirm that a 17-year-old male from the Woolton area was interviewed under caution, following a report of an assault on Friday 2 November.
"A 27-year-old woman received slight injuries during the incident in the Liverpool 8 [Toxteth] area. At this time, the investigation is ongoing and no formal action has been taken."
Liverpool FC have declined to comment on the matter.
Sterling has been one of the Premier League’s most eye-catching players so far this season.
Given his chance by Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, the youngster has tormented defenders with his lightening pace, and confident trickery with the ball at his feet.
He has even won a call-up to the senior England team.
With the Reds reportedly in contract negotiations with Sterling over his first senior contract, and with his immense positive impact on their season so far, the last thing any of the parties wants is a run-in with the law for an indefensible misdemeanour.
Meanwhile, Stewart Downing- the player Sterling has essentially replaced in the Liverpool first team- has been linked with a loan move to his former club, Middlesbrough.
Ironically, Downing has also been in trouble with the law for allegedly assaulting a woman during his time as a Liverpool player.
