More Magnificent Barca Milestones

14 January 2013

Barcelona may soon have to start breaking CDs, after shattering so many records.

Their win over Malaga last night not only re-established their 11 point lead over Atletico Madrid, and their 18 point lead over defending champions Real Madrid, but it also represented a host of new milestones.

Unbeaten after the first half of the season, Barca have collected a record of 55 points from the 57 on offer thus far.

Their only dropped points came from a draw against Los Blancos earlier in the campaign.

By beating tricky Malaga, it was Barca’s 18th win in 19 league matches under Tito Vilanova, furthering the recently recovered manager’s impressive record-breaking run of victories.

Another record set by Barca as a team last night, was in scoring for the 37th consecutive La Liga match, a best-ever feat for the Spanish top flight.

Meanwhile, no Barca record-setting session would be complete without Lionel Messi getting in on the action, and La Pulga Atomica duly obliged at La Rosaleda.

In scoring his 28th goal of the league season, Messi set a personal record for finding the back of the net in nine straight games. And he is now just one short of the league’s all-time record of goals scored in 10 consecutive games, set by former Barca star, Ronaldo.

And to put the cherry on top, Opta Stats suggests that with 41 assists, Messi has now made “more assists than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues in the last three seasons”, ahead of Mesut Ozil on 37.

It goes without saying that with 147 goals to his name in that period, Messi has also scored more goals than any player in Europe’s top five leagues too.

@Cbucsok, the boy looked good, but I only saw a few highlights of him which is hardly enough action for me to form an opinion let alone a comparison with Eto'o.

@vyzouw, I saw the highlights of Dongou during the 2012 NextGen Series, (Eurosport on Top TV). That was when he was still playing for Juvenil A, before his promotion to Barca B. And I must say, he looked very good. As for the other youngsters, I actually haven't seen them in action, I just follow their progress on various media outlets. My apologies for the late response Cule, I'm having a hectic day!

@vyzouw, Cule I think Marc Bartra is more than capable of partnering Pique at the back right now, even more so then. As for the bench, I think the likes Planas, Rafinha, Sergi Roberto and that Cameronian boy called Dongou will be ready!
