Magic Messi Passes Muller Mark
10 December 2012
Lionel Messi broke Gerd Muller's record of 85 goals in a calendar year as Barcelona beat Real Betis 2-1 on Sunday night.
Messi scored twice for the visitors to secure the three points despite Ruben Castro reducing the deficit for Betis.
The Argentine maestro wasted little time to surge past Muller's mark. Messi started the game on 84 goals in 2012 and went to 86 in the first 25 minutes.
In the 16th minute Messi gained possession on the right and cut into the penalty area by beating three defenders before placing his shot in the bottom corner of the Betis goal.
He then notched up number 86 shortly thereafter. Andres Iniesta provided the assist with a deft little back-heel to Messi who finished with a superb left-footed strike to break the 40-year-old record.
Castro gave Betis hope of getting something out of the game when he pulled one back in the 39th minute. Substitute Vadillo sent a clever through-ball to Castro who beat Victor Valdes with a curling shot.
The home side started the second half positively and made the Barca defence look rather fragile at times. On one such occasion Valdes nearly handed Betis the equaliser when he dropped an average cross into the area, but he recovered just in time.
There were a number of late chances for both sides as Pozuelo hit the woodwork for Betis before Messi and Jordi Alba both did the same at the other end.
The victory sees Barcelona maintain their six-point lead over Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga.

The record for the most goals scored is held by Godrey Chitalu of Zambia and not by Messi. Messi fans should also realise that it took 60 games for Mueller to score 85 goals whereas it took Messi 6 more games.

All the small boys must stop name calling on my post but argue facts. It shows that you have nothing to put on the table to support your argument about Messi being the best player. FYI I have a degree in science and a management qualification young Jommack. Yes Villa has scored more goals than all strikers in Spain's history due to Xaviesta. Not only did Messi struggle in Argentina he also failed to score even a single goal in SA 2010 and did not even have an impact.

Muller praises Giant Messi: "My record of 85 goals in 60 matches, which stood since 1972, was beaten by the best player in the world, Lionel Messi, and I'm very happy for him," Mueller said, according to a spokesman for his former club, Bayern Munich. The former Germany striker added that he thought Messi was "an incredible player, a giant who is at the same time very nice and a polished professional". "I hope he'll score one or two goals again in the matches that remain in 2012 and that his record will stand for the next 40 years," added Mueller, who was nicknamed "Der Bomber" (The Bomber)."

I cn use da Messi argument as a tool to measure a person's IQ. I would use questions such as,"is Messi da GOAT?", If u say No, thn i wud knw dat ur reasonin capacity is limitd, anada question wud b, "Is Messi a product of Xaviesta?", if u say Yes, i was gona conclude dat ur an a**hole.

@Lalo Y can't other Barca & Spain's fowards score as many goal as Messi if his goals are only due to Xaviesta's brilliance?Messi won u20 World cup (scored 6 goals, was a best player & top scorer) & Olympics gold medals, was it also thanx to Xaviesta? Messi hasn't won anything with Argentina's senior team but has sadR7 won anything with Portugal at all?Torres has 2 continental & 1 World cup gold medals,is he better than sadR7?

And only a moron like lalo can ask such a question, according to his 40% matric 'pass' logic, everyone must win a tournament on home ground, great, every man of the match must score a goal, wow!! What breathtakingly insightful logic lalo, now go to sleep & let that 'stuff' wear off, bloody idiot!

This foolish Escoba4 is also barred from commenting on my post. He is too mentally impoverished to discuss with me. @sbu you cannot predict the future. Spain is also still doing very well and not yet willing to let go easily. I am not bitter but disappointed by the people who are influenced by the sensasionalisation of the media aiming to make Messi better than what he is. The fact that he is failing at argentina is a fact. If Messi failed to inspire his snr national team at home what makes you think he will do it in another land(brazil).
