Gerrard: Suarez Deserves UCL
21 January 2013
Steven Gerrard says Liverpool need to qualify for next season’s Uefa Champions League to ensure Luis Suarez remains at the club.
The Uruguayan forward recently signed a long-term contract extension with the Reds, and has gone on record to say how happy he is at Anfield.
But there is not a top club in the world who would say no to Suarez the player, despite his polarising antics.
And so Gerrard fears that if Liverpool do not make a return to the big leagues soon, some successful team will swoop in to entice their free-scoring talisman away.
"I know he's recently signed a long-term contract. I know that he's comfortable and he's happy here. But I think that's a question for Luis to answer," Gerrard told Sky's Goals on Sunday.
“Only he knows what his ambitions and dreams are. He's gone on record recently and said he's really happy and comfortable here.
"Hopefully we can put a fight on from now until the end of the season to finish fourth, and make the decision for him. But Luis Suarez deserves to be in the Champions League. I think everyone has to admit that."
Suarez scored his 20th goal of the season as Liverpool climbed to within seven points of fourth place by smashing Norwich on Saturday.
And so with a strong second half of the campaign, it is not inconceivable that the Reds will be in the Champions League mix in a few months’ time, and that Suarez will continue to see his sought-after future on Merseyside.
