City Send Holders Crashing Out
22 February 2012
Manchester City cruised into the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League with an emphatic 4-0 win over FC Porto in the second-leg of their last 32 tie at the Etihad Stadium. City won 6-1 on aggregate.
The holders came to England with the odds stacked against them after losing 2-1 to City in Portugal and the Premier League leaders took just 19 seconds to extend their lead.
Nicolas Otamendi gave the ball away to Yaya Toure who calmly sent Sergio Aguero through and he made no mistake from inside the area.
Toure could have doubled their advantage in the 16th minute but after bursting through, he was unable to beat Helton who made the save. The rebound fell to Samir Nasri but instead of shooting he tried to pick out Toure who was then offside.
Varela had a decent chance to pull a goal back for the visitors moments later but Joe Hart stood firm to make the block.
Aguero should have made it 2-0 just before the half-hour mark after possession was given away by Porto again but the Argentina international saw his chipped effort hit the bar after going around the goalkeeper.
Porto continued to be frustrated and Otamendi took the ball away from Maicon after a brilliant cross from Rolando as the chance was wasted.
City would eventually go on to double their advantage and effectively kill off the tie when substitute Edin Dzeko rifled the ball home after being played through by Aguero.
Porto would then be cut down to 10 men a minute later when Rolando continued to argue with the referee and was swiftly shown a second yellow card.
City were now in cruise control and saw David Silva tap in their third of the night in the 84th minute before David Pizarro completed the rout two minutes later.
