Huntelaar v Gomez In Subplot Battle
22 February 2012
The subplots will be thick at the Allianz Arena this weekend, when heated rivals Bayern Munich and Schalke clash in the Bundesliga.
The heavyweight pair forms part of the chasing pack with designs on Borussia Dortmund’s crown. And with Bayern and Schalke four and five points behind Dortmund respectively, the three points on offer are subplot number one.
Number two is the place of Bayern shot stopper Manuel Neuer in goal against his former team.
Number three is the burning desire of Schalke striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar to score past his old team-mate.
Huntelaar’s brace against Wolfsburg in the last round of fixtures took him level with Bayern’s Mario Gomez at the top of the scoring charts on 18 goals.
He also missed a penalty which would have put him in front alone, and the head to head between the Bundesliga’s hottest scorers provides subplot number four.
Huntelaar regrets his missed spot kick. He badly wants to end the season as Germany’s top scorer, and he is determined to put it right ahead of Gomez this weekend.
''That was really frustrating,'' Huntelaar said of his spot kick woes. ''I really hit the penalty badly. I was so annoyed with myself to have wasted two chances.
''Of course I want to score more than Gomez. I am delighted to be at the top of the scoring charts.''
Who’s a better hit-man: Dutch international Huntelaar or German international Gomez?
