Egypt Knocked Out By Leone Stars
04 September 2011
Egypt were eliminated from the 2012 African Cup of Nations after losing 2-1 to Sierra Leone in Freetown on Saturday.
The result took Sierra Leone level on points with South Africa at the top of Group G and gave them a major boost in their bid for qualification.
The Pharaohs had won the last three consecutive AFCON tournaments but endured a dismal qualifying campaign as they made a shock exit.
The hosts made a bright start and took the lead just 15 minutes in when Sherriff Suma tucked away the opener.
Mohsen Maruwan brought the Egyptians level just before the break but a late penalty from Mohamed Bangura would eventually secure all three points for the Leone Stars.
