Chiefs Carve Through Arrows
02 February 2011
ABSA Premiership
Venue: Moses Mabhida Stadium
Result: Golden Arrows 1-2 Kaizer Chiefs
Date: 2 February 2011
Referee: Victor Gomes
A Sthembiso Ngcobo brace was enough to see Kaizer Chiefs maintain their PSL title challenge with a hard-fought 2-1 win over a valiant ten-man Golden Arrows in tonight's Premiership tie at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. Ngcobo stepped up to the plate in the absence of leading scorer Knowledge Musona with his first goals for Amakhosi in the season and although Arrows got one back through Collins Mbesuma, the sending off of Siyanda Zwane for a second bookable offence killed off any hopes of a comeback.
Amakhosi started with purpose, with the influential Siphiwe Tshabala, fresh from his first brace for the club, looking dangerous. Chiefs had the run of the wide areas but were almost punished by Zwane early on. Itumeleng Khune could only parry a menacing low effort and had to rely on Valerie Nahayo to clear. Chiefs had a couple of strikes on goal via Jimmy Tau and Ngcobo but nothing to give any undue trouble to Arrows keeper Helton da Rocha.
The teams went into half-time without troubling the scorers and Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic must have been wondering if it was to be another one of those days for the Soweto giants. The Serb made an inspired change in bringing on Abia Nale for Mandla Masango in the 52nd minute. The former Arrows man was almost immediately on the offensive, terrorising the right flank before delivering a cross that Helton da Rocha made a meal of. Ngcobo was on hand to head home at the back post.
Ngcobo got his second soon after, firing low into the bottom corner past a helpless da Rocha. The home team have shown this season that they are not a side that will lie down - former Chiefs favourite Collins Mbesuma showed Herculean strength to hold off the towering Nahayo and slotting home in the 69th minute.
The game had changed and it looked like Arrows might steal a point off the Glamour Boys. Instead, Zwane got his marching orders in the 71st minute, earning a second yellow for a reckless tackle and Abafana Bes'thende's faint hopes were snuffed out.
In a nervy last few minutes for the visitors, Chiefs managed to hold off a spirited Arrows rally and reach the PSL summit for the first time this season, if only momentarily. Arrows will have to be more disciplined if they are to move up into the top half of the log.

Good result but we should have used the red card of arrows to score more goals. Yes V V we defend as a team when we loose the ball, but lets not to conceed goals when playing @ home. In the log standings for the top 3 teams we have conceded more goals than flops and rats
