PSL Fixtures Are A Cause For Concern - Reader’s Voice
I am concerned with how the PSL runs the business, especially in terms of fixtures.
Out of 16 teams, only 4 are playing because it was a weekend for MTN8 fixtures (9-10 September). On the day of the final, only 2 out of 16 will play on that weekend.
This doesn't make sense to me at all. Football lovers and general people follow soccer on weekends and it is easier to have matches shown on television, especially by SABC on weekends. Now the PSL is losing that exposure all in the name of a Cup Weekend.
What I would suggest is:
1. When the tournament reaches semi-final stage, play those semis on Friday or Saturday (3 pm and 6 pm) so the rest of the teams can still play the remainder of the weekend.
2. Play semis on Wednesdays so that we are guaranteed full weekend of football.
3. The final can be played on Saturday (3 pm or 8 pm) then the other teams can play the remainder of the weekend.
What normally happens at some stage of the season is that we get fixture congestion, and PSL teams play catch up because of all the time they wasted during the 'Cup Weekends' when few teams were actually participating.
The PSL should give us a full spectrum of football on weekends.
