RAPPER and record producer Yanga Chief believes that he's where he is because he was raised by a strong, black woman.

The rapper, whose real name is Yanga Ntshakaza, celebrated his mother through a song.

The 36-year-old from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape said he and his three siblings were raised by his single mum.

The Utatakho hitmaker said he decided to write a song about his relationship with his mother.

"Since my dad passed when I was 15, I've lived my life with my single mother and siblings. I wanted to show her gratitude for everything she did for all of us," he said.

He said that he's grateful for everything his mother has contributed to his life.

"As you grow older, you start to recognise all the sacrifices that your parents have made and the opportunities they've granted you," he said.

He said that his mother had played a huge role in his career.

"My mum is a teacher and most of the time, some of the fans I'd run into would be her students. How they speak about her was really heartwarming for me, especially because I've spent so much time in Joburg. So, those are the students that spend more time with her," he said.

Yanga said he wanted to thank his mum for allowing him to pursue his career.

"I want to thank her for allowing me to chase my dreams and not once did she judge me or tried to get me to change my mind. Since high school, my mum has always encouraged me to do whatever I wanted; some have worked, and some haven't," he said.

He said that seeing his mother's effect on pupils always reminds him of how lucky he was to be raised by her.
